Farmhouse Laundry Room

Ugghh, laundry!!!! This is one task that never seems to be complete in our home. Sometimes it feels like I spend my entire life in the laundry room. We were in desperate need of additional space in our laundry room, so we decided to build it out into our garage. My dream was to have enough room for 8 laundry baskets to be able to sort our laundry efficiently. Our laundry room also serves as our mudroom, so we wanted space for coats, shoes, backpacks, and other storage. I hang dry a lot of our clothes, so I also wanted plenty of space and drying racks to make this task a little easier. I handed this “laundry room wishlist” to my husband and needless to say we had our work cut out for us.

The Fun Part-Decor!

We chose an industrial/farmhouse theme for our laundry room even though this isn’t typically my style. For the rest of my home, I usually choose more glamorous decor, but farmhouse in my laundry room seemed perfect. It is a great way to be on trend, without the overkill of an entire industrial themed home. This was a really fun room to decorate!

Baskets: For years I used a mix of randomly collected mismatched laundry baskets. Until this renovation, we were still using a basket that I had while in my college dorm room! We chose these laundry baskets from Target for their size, sturdiness and wicker basket-weave design. We also used these gray and white baskets from Target in the cubbies underneath the bench to store gloves, hats and scarves.

Flooring: We needed something durable and easy to clean. I love look of weathered hardwood, but putting hardwood in a laundry room was not a smart decision. We decided on these porcelain wood look tiles from Lowe’s in the color, Ash.

Lighting: We needed something industrial looking that provided a lot of light, so we chose these beautiful light fixtures from Home Depot.

Drying Rack: This is my favorite addition to our new laundry room! I wanted a wall mounted drying rack that was located over the utility to sink in order to let wet items have a place to drip dry. I also wanted it located next to my washer, so I could quickly place our delicates on it to air dry. This galvanized and wood one from Pottery Barn was exactly what we needed and completed our farmhouse look.

Wall Art: I don’t usually decorate with signs, but they were perfectly suited for our laundry room. This metal sign from Kirkland’s worked well over the washer and dryer. This chalkboard sign from Hobby Lobby was ideal for over our doorway. We used these wash and dry hanging signs to hang from our drying rod over the folding table.

Other Decor: I chose blue glass jars with these cotton stems from Hobby Lobby, which is fitting for a laundry room. We also chose these, these and these to decorate our top shelf.

Barn Wood Trim: Josh has a business acquaintance in Middleburg, VA who let him use some old barn wood for our trim. The trim made gave the room a unique look and I loved the way it turned out!

Brick Wall: This is probably my favorite part of our laundry room project, because I LOVE painted brick. We used a product called Thin Brick provided by General Shale in Northern VA.

Shiplap Accent Wall with Hooks: Contrary to recent popular opinion, I don’t love shiplap, but I’m glad we added just a touch of it to our modern farmhouse laundry space. We decided to use it on the wall behind the bench where our hooks would be for coats and backpacks. These hooks from Home Depot matched our black hardware and were a perfect size.

Industrial Pipe Clothing Rods: Since I hang dry so many of our clothing items, I needed plenty of space to do this! In addition to the drying rack, I wanted rods installed to hang wet clothes on hangers. I also use the rods to hang clothes on as I’m steaming them. Josh used black iron pipe from Lowe’s to construct the rods, which added to the industrial look of the room.

Industrial Hardware: We wanted hardware to match the black iron pipes that we used for the rods. We found the perfect hardware, but they didn’t come in black, so we spray painted them with matte black paint to match our rods. You can find the cabinet hardware at Home Depot here.

Washer & Dryer: This was probably our most difficult decision. Josh does Crossfit 5 days/week, so we have a daily load of workout clothes. We wanted a machine that could clean two loads of laundry at once and were thrilled to find this Samsung Flex Washing Machine and Dryer! They have honestly changed my life. I am able to do a small load of laundry in my top washer as I wash a larger load below simultaneously. The dryer also has two machines. The top dryer only dries one item at a time, but it is very valuable if you need a delicate item dried quickly.

Dog Crate: We also needed more space for Mayla’s crate than we had before. Mayla loves her crate and she stays in it when were are away. It makes her feel safe and secure. This white table-top crate from Wayfair was exactly what I had in mind. The hard surface on top is a perfect spot for her toy box. We put it right in front of the window, because she likes to look out and watch the world go by!

Paint Colors: The ceilings and walls were painted in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. The door color is Iced Marble by Benjamin Moore.
