GIRLS’ BATHROOM REMODEL

This project has been a long time coming!! We began planning the bathroom remodel this time last year and it is finally finished! I’m so excited to share the details of this project with you. Let me know what you think in the comments or message me on Instagram!

Tankless Hot Water Heater

Before we could even get started on the girls’ bathroom, we had to figure out our hot water situation. Having girls in the house means we use A LOT of hot water and our previous 80 gallon electric hot water tank was not cutting it anymore. It seemed like we were running out of hot water for showers every night between the three of us girls! So, we decided to invest in a propane tankless hot water system. This has honestly been one of the best decisions we have made since becoming home owners 18 years ago! Not only do we have virtually unlimited hot water on demand and lower electric bills, but there is also a lot less bickering over who gets to take a shower first. Electric hot water tanks are one of the most expensive items on your electric bill each month and we were more than happy to get rid of it on ours!

Not a glamorous photo, but this is our tankless water heater (it’s in the basement).

The Previous Bathroom Design

Josh and I were very fortunate to have had the opportunity to build our home when I was only 22 years old. Admittedly, I knew nothing about the importance of functional family spaces at that age. The girls’ bathroom had a pedestal sink and a standard size tub/shower. The tub worked well for the girls when they were little, but as they grew into teens it just wasn’t practical anymore. The main reason for this is because the tub overpowered the bathroom space. As a result, we did not have enough space in the bathroom for a larger vanity. A pedestal sink might be nice for a powder room, but for two teenage girls with curling irons and hair dryers, it did not work!! We definitely needed to figure out a way to get them some more counter space.

The New Design

In order to increase countertop space, we needed additional space in the room for a larger vanity. To do this, we removed the old tub and replaced it with a glass shower stall. When deciding on a size, we made sure that it was large enough for the girls to comfortably shave their legs (we even added a little shelf to put their foot on) and have room for all of their stuff (fyi-teenage girls have lots of “stuff”)! 36×42″ was the perfect size and still allowed for additional wall space to fit a bigger vanity. Glass shower doors were a must, because we wanted the room to appear more open. We also removed the wall that had previously separated the shower from the sink area, which made an enormous difference in the open feel of the room.

Mosaic Tile

Next, we took the girls to Mosaic Tile. This is where the fun starts! The Mosaic Tile showroom in Chantilly, VA has so much inspiration that it didn’t take long to narrow down what we liked. In the showroom, there are many vignettes that display a variety of tiles to choose from, so visualizing was easy. Going in to the consultations we had already decided on a few things: the girls wanted gold fixtures and a boujee/glam vibe; we also knew that we wanted the bathroom to be mostly white to give the illusion of a bigger room. Ultimately, we decided on these porcelain tiles that look like Calacatta marble. We loved them as soon as we saw them! The tiles are mostly white with warm gray veining. We decided on large 12×24″ tiles, since larger tiles in a small area help any room look larger. They recommended matte tiles for the floor and glossier tiles for the shower walls! The matte tiles are not slippery at all which is a much safer option for bathroom floors since they tend to get wet easily. They also suggested that we install the tiles on the shower walls vertically instead of horizontally. At first I was not sure how I felt about that. However, since we have 8 ft ceilings I was willing to try it to make the ceiling height appear taller-thankfully, this did the trick! The next selection we made was accent tile. This was an easy decision for me. I was pretty sure that I wanted small herringbone tiles on an accent wall behind the vanity mirrors. Mosaic Tile had exactly what I was looking for! They even had it on display so the girls could visualize it! We chose to do this same pattern on the shower floor and inside the shelving cut-out in the shower!

Vanity Sink & Cabinet Hardware

We had originally planned on getting a vanity furniture piece with one sink so we could maximize the countertop space. At first, we chose this 48″ vanity from Lowe’s. I loved the fact that it had mirrored doors! However, after giving it more thought (and seeing the results of an Instagram poll!) we decided that two sinks would work better, so we squeezed in this 60″ vanity from The Home Depot. The best part is that the quality of this vanity is amazing for the price! It comes with a Carrara marble top and soft close drawers. It also has plenty of space for makeup and hair products! The only thing that we needed to change was the hardware. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED the beautiful chrome hardware that it came with and it killed me to have to switch it out, but it didn’t match our faucets. So, we chose hardware that had a just a touch of gold. Thankfully, I loved these equally as much and the lucite added a unique touch.

I love all of the storage space!

Kohler Kathryn Toilet

The most exciting part! Haha, kidding! But this one-piece toilet from Kohler is super boujee as far as toilets go. 😉 I love the angles of the base and the comfort height. It adds to the decor instead of just being something that’s stuck in the room for necessity.

The hexagonal shape of the base is really unique

Faucets & Lighting

I saw these sconces on an Instagram ad for Perigold and knew that I had to incorporate them into the bathroom design. I loved the ruffled edges. They are feminine, but in a subtle way (not over-the-top girly). I also loved that it was antique gold instead of bright yellow gold, which I’m not a hug fan of. When choosing faucets and accessories, I tried to find antique gold to match, but it wasn’t easy! There are so many different shades of gold! It was really difficult to find faucets in the style and color that I wanted, but we found these faucets by Kingston Brass and they were a very similar match to the gold in the light fixture! When it came to a shower head, we were hoping for something in a “rain” style. The girls both have really thick hair and I wanted something with enough pressure to be able to quickly rinse the shampoo. (Also, rain shower heads are super fun and glam)! For overhead lighting, we decided to install a mini semi-flush mount chandelier. We needed something that was small (no larger than 12″ from the ceiling) and this one from Amazon was not only beautiful but also super inexpensive (less than $35)!

It was difficult finding golds that matched, but we were fortunate to find lighting and faucets that were both available in antique gold shades.

Molding & Paint

One thing that we were positive about from the start, was that the bathroom would be painted white. The bathroom had previously been painted in super bright colors and we wanted something more grown-up. What I love about white painted walls is that we can change the accent color if we want something different in the future without having to change the paint color. All we would need to do is switch out the curtains and towels-so easy! The paint color we chose was Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. It is the perfect shade of white because it is a bright white without being too stark. It doesn’t have any warmth which is exactly what we were looking for. For the walls and ceiling we used Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa paint which is a matte paint. A matte finish has slightly more shine than a flat finish, but not quite as much shine as eggshell. Aura Bath & Spa paint is made specifically for bathrooms since they typically get a lot of moisture. For the trim we used satin paint in the same color. We also decided to add some visual interest to a blank wall by installing some trim work. Josh did such a great job! We decided to do 1×1″ trim in rectangular shapes with ogee molding on the inside of the rectangles!

Josh did such a beautiful job on this trim wall-he’s so talented! These gold bow hooks from Hobby Lobby were the perfect touch to compliment our molding!

Curtains & Towels

The accent color was difficult to choose because Bianca’s favorite color is purple and Bella’s is blue. They each wanted their favorite color (of course!). Blush pink was the compromise (ok, ok…I admit it, pink is MY favorite color, so that may have weighed into the decision!) We ultimately decided on two shades of pink towels from Target to create an ombre look. The curtains we chose are from Amazon (I get all of my curtains from Amazon) and I loved the color. They look super high end, but are not pricey at all. I love the crushed velvet and how they tie at the top. I also like how the sunlight filters through them. I tied them in bows for a feminine look. They look so great on the gold curtain rod (also from Amazon)!

I love how these curtains have hand-tied tabs, because the bows are super girly!
I wonder how long their linen closet will stay neat like this?!
We loved the ombre pink theme!

Accessories & Decor

This part was fun! When I was finally making these selections, I knew the project was almost complete!

T.P. Holder

Ok, I will start with the toilet paper holder. I really liked this one from Walmart, because of the antique look. It also has a phone holder on top…for obvious reasons 😉

Tissue Box

My favorite accessory by far is the tissue box. You guys, this is just gorgeous. The glass and gold combo is timeless. It is from Amazon and super affordable for how high-end it looks!

Stand-Alone Hand Towel Holder

I chose this hand towel holder, because we had no place to put a towel bar! On one side of the vanity was the glass shower wall and the other side was the window! My friend, Becky, suggested a stand-alone towel bar and I loved that idea! I found this marble & gold one on Amazon!

We didn’t have a place to mount a towel bar on the all, so we decided on this free-standing one from Amazon!
Soap Dispensers & Trash Can

The soap dispensers and trash cans are both from Target! This trash can shape matched the base of the toilet and I loved that. It was also antique gold which matched perfectly! The soap dispensers were a more difficult choice. I loved the dispensers that matched the trash can we purchased, but I decided that it was too much solid gold on the vanity top, so we opted for the glass ones with only the gold pump. Glass soap dispensers are great because you can see when you need to refill your soap. You can also add color to the bathroom with different color soaps!

The octagonal shape of the trash can looks good next to the toilet-I also liked that it was antique gold instead of bright yellow gold!

Gold Jars

I have had my eye on these jars from Pottery Barn Teen for Years! I love the entire Emily & Merritt line and these lids were just too perfect to pass up for a girl’s bathroom. I definitely could have chosen a less expensive option, but I kept coming back to these. I’m so glad I did!

These were a splurge, but I have been eyeing them for years!
Gold Accent Mirror

The gold round floral mirror from Target was perfect for this room and SOOO affordable. It is no surprise that this mirror sells out very quickly each time it is restocked, because it is only $40! I had also considered the bow mirror from PB Teen but the $250 price tag is why I ultimately chose the Target mirror instead!

If you find this mirror in stock-get it! They sell out so quickly!
Vanity Mirrors

Ok, so these vanity mirrors were not in the original plan. I had actually ordered different mirrors to use, but they did not fit well in the space. We measured for them beforehand, but they were an atypical shape and they just did not work well with the pencil molding above the sink. So, these mirrors were plan B. I really love the shape and how pretty they look with the sconces on either side of them. Another bonus is that they were super affordable and from Amazon!

I really loved the shape of these, but they weren’t what I had originally planned
Gold Hamper

This was such a great find! Beautiful, great quality, and inexpensive! Walmart for the win!!

Glass Shower Walls

This was a special order item that took some research and some time to have it made. I’m so glad we decided on glass because it really opens up the bathroom! My one concern is that we will get water spots…so I haven’t even let the girls start showering in there yet! We do have a water softener, but we have a high amount of TDS in our water, so regardless of whether or not we have soft water, we will get water spots. I purchased this water spot treatment for glass shower walls which is supposed to prevent water stains. The directions say to buff it onto the glass like Rain-X and then you should be good to go! We haven’t attempted this yet, but it just came in the mail so I will be trying it soon and will report back on my Instagram stories!

The glass shower walls make the room feel more open! I also love the gold accents.
We hope this will prevent water spots on the glass!!

I hope you enjoyed reading this long post about our Teen Girls’ Bathroom Makeover! Thanks so much for reading!

Happy Decorating, Friends!!
